Understanding Sciatica: A Common Culprit Behind Back Pain

Today we are going to shed some light on something that really hits home for a lot of us, and even more so for our poor backs. We’re talking about something that bothers many of us very much – sciatica. But just what is it, and why does it happen? The truth is that it can be a problem for a lot of people, but it’s something many of us haven’t heard about.

Sciatica isn't your garden-variety back pain, but a very specific kind that finds its root in your sciatic nerve. This one is somewhat like an I-95, starting at the base of your spine and then heading down each leg. When something pushes on it or irritates it—bam!—sciatica. A pain, tingling, or even a numbing feeling is felt in the back, and it could go all the way to the toe.

What Sciatica's All About

Pressure Is Not Its Pal

Sciatica tends to happen when the nerve connected to the leg, the sciatic nerve, is put under pressure. That can be due to a whole host of things, like a herniated disc, a bone spur in your spine, or just from sitting on your wallet for too long.

One may have sciatica and not have much pain

One may describe it like electric shock and the other one may have a dull or a numbing feeling that's continuous, felt in the lower back or in one leg.

It Loves to Crash the Party

It could come as a sudden as a bolt out of the blue, occurring when something is lifted and is really heavy, or when your back is twisted into an awkward position.

So, How Do You I Get Rid Of It?

Keep moving

It's probably the last thing on your mind right now, but some light exercises do help. Think walking or light stretching.

Sit smart

Choose chairs easy on your back and place both feet on the ground. Ditch that wallet from the back pocket too.
